Summary on Grant Application Form
A deterministic assessment of the capacity of safety-critical reinforced concrete structures to withstand abnormal impact loads that are beyond the design criteria must frequently be demonstrated in several areas of Civl Engineering. The route to confident prediction, based on computational procedure, of the response of such structures, including near ultimate load effects of scabbing, spallation and penetration, is hampered both by a lack of adquate computational solution procedures and the availability of good quality, comprehensively reported, experimental results. The proposed research aims to develop computational techniques based on combined continuum/discontinuum solution methods to simulate the dynamic behaviour of impact loaded R/C structures within the nonlinear range, where extensive cracking of concrete can take place in conjunction with yielding of the steel reinforcement, resulting in mechanisms leading to scabbing, spallation, penetration and possibly, complete failure. A series of carefully designed experiements will be incorporated in the test programme in order to provide material data for numerical modelling and also to validate the computational procedures developed. Eventurally an industrial standard numerical decision support system will be established to assess the performance of R/C structures under impact loading and to further optimise the design of such structures.
