In North America the Energy Policy Act of 1992 introduced minimum efficiency standards for 2-, 4-, and 6-pole motors rated from 0.75 to 150kW sold in the USA, from Oct 1997 onwards. In Europe a voluntary efficiency labelling scheme has been agreed between the EU and CEMEP, the organisation of European electric motor manufacturers' associations. Improving motor efficiencies relies on an improved understanding of one of significant loss components - stray load losses - which is the subject of EPSRC award GR/R10608/01 directly related to this fellowship.A central feature of this work is the precise measurement of induction motor losses using a high-precision calorimeter. This high precision test facility for measuring motor losses will be integrated into a motor testing environment that conforms to the international testing procedures for induction motors. The most accurate of these is generally accepted to be that used in the USA - IEEE 1128. Professor Wallace and his group at Oregon State University have significant experience in the design and construction of test facilities, procedures and protocols as well as extensive testing experience using IEEE 1128. His contribution will accelerate and add value to the initial stages of the UMIST experimental program, enabling more detailed investigations in the later stages of the project.
