An exceptionally broad team of intemationally-established researchers has come together through the Basic Technology initiative. They will develop new methodologies to demonstrate fully the potential of terahertz waves and produce unique mufti-dimensional depictions of mechanical, compositional and physiological structures. They will use these in conjunction with their existing scanning terahertz spectrometers to uncover previously inaccessible research infomation. They will investigate a wide spectrum of topics from cancer identification through combustion and food science to archaeology. This programme promises new capabilities for terahertz systems including sub-millisecond imaging, circularly polarised sources, the integration of terahertz and MRI systems, and a portfolio of continuous wave instrumentation, sources and detectors. These may be incorporated into systems tailored to the problemspecific information acquisition opportunities identified by this programme. An important target will be the specification and design of portable and affordable systems, with user expertise steering the requirements for optimised sources and detectors. The team will undertake fundamental studies on terahertz science, including investigating chemical, biological and rheological contrast mechanisms, non-linear gaussian optics and quasi-optical information processing. Strong links will be established with beneficiaries including academic and industrial researchers and the manufacturers of optical and electronic components and systems.
