Summary on Grant Application Form
Co-operative research between applicants over the last 5 yrs has demonstrated that glass-ionomer dental cements undergo complex interactions with aqueous solutions, and these result in changes in mass of the cement, alterations in the PH of the surrounding medium, and release of the various ions. Of these, flouride is concidered beneficial while aluminium is potentially harmful. The present proposal is to extend these studies to focus particularly on aluminium release, and to determine whether this may be controlled by relatively straightforward changes in the formulation of cements.
