A sensor and methodology using phase stepping have been developed for the rapid collection of full-field characteristic parameters from multiple views to be applied to tomographic photoelasticity. As tensor tomography is mathematically non-trivial, no attempt has been made to obtain experimentally the full-field reconstructed stress field for the general three-dimensional case. A new collaboration is proposed between Experimental Mechanics (Sheffield), Computer Science (Sheffield), and Mathematics (UMIST) to investigate novel methods of tomographic reconstruction of stress fields in photoelastic models and the experimental implementation of these methods in an industrial context. Algorithms will be developed for the efficient solution of the forward and inverse problems. The solution of the inverse problem will incorporate prior smoothness known from the linear elasticity equations. Light sources and the size of rotation increments will be investigated. The data collection system and the new reconstruction methodology will be integrated and tested on models of real engineering components. The outcome of the proposed research will be a rapid, non-destructive, full-field computational/experimental method for the assessment of three-dimensional stress fields. The proposal will contribute to the foresight priorities of optical technology and sensors and sensory information processing.
