Summary on Grant Application Form
Optical Tomography is a new imaging modaliy that is of high international interst. the application has been instrumental in developing model based non-linear image reconstruction methods for this technique. This proposal is to seek dedicated resources for the development of these models in a rigorous and systematic way, both in mathematical terms and in efficent implementation via finite element and boundary element methods. The correct treatment requires solutions to the Radiactive Transfer Equation which is notorisously computationally intensive. However, recognising the illpoasedness of the inverse problem it is only appropriate to solve the RTE up to a level of precision that is measureable. Therefore approximations will be developed that have the requisite precision close to boudaries but are smooth away from them. this can be acheived via the so-called Pn approximations. We will develop the analysis of these and efficient implemtnations. Numerical methods based on multigrid preconditioners will be developed for these approximations. For realistic problems appropraite meshing will be required, respecting external and internal surfaces corresponding to anatomy. All developed software will be released on the internet.
