Summary on Grant Application Form
The importance of communication networks and their use on a daily basis has been steadily growing over the past few decades. Mobile radio networks are expected to play an important role in future commercial and military applications. These networks are suitable in situations where instant infrastructure is needed and no central system administration is available. There are two important communication primitives used in the process of dissemination of information in networks: broadcasting and gossiping also known as total information exchange. While the broadcasting problem has been intensively studied in the context of radio networks, relatively little has been done in its gossiping counterpart. It is our intention to extend and intensify studies on gossiping problem in radio networks. The explorations will be focused on certain aspects of radio communication including orientation of connections, availability of collision detection mechanism, and the size of combined messages. We will consider various types of algorithms, such as: randomized versus deterministic, oblivious versus adaptive, and exact versus approximation algorithms. Moreover in all cases we will attempt to design provably optimal or asymptotically optimal algorithms, demonstrating their performance and establishing corresponding lower bounds as evidence of optimality.
