Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project is the further development of mathematically consistent and accurate plasticity models for describing the deformation and plastic flow of granular soils and their application to the analysis of soil penetration problems in geotechnical engineering. The emphasis of the project is to use and further develop a class of non-traditional models, namely those based on a certain kinematic hypothesis and micro-mechanics, in the context of geotechnical engineering. A unified mathematical model will also be developed to incorporate the concepts of both the kinematic hypothesis and the more traditional critical state-based plastic potential theory.Once the plasticity models are developed, they will be implemented into a displacement-based finite element program with the aim of solving an important geotechnical engineering problem, namely deep cone and pile penetration in soils. The performance of the various soil models will be assessed by comparing their numerical predictions with existing data on cone penetration tests in sand carried out.in calibration chambers under wellcontrolled initial and boundary conditions.
