Photonic crystal fibres have in recent years proven to be an ideal medium for exploring nonlinear optical effects at high intensities in glass. This is largely because the sign, magnitude, slope and curvature of the chromatic dispersion can be designed to fulfil the requirements of a particular application, at the same time allowing very high effective nonlinearities (through the very small core area). This combination of properties has led to the broadest band & most efficient super-continuum generators ever reported (collaborations are in place with around 20 groups world-wide. This joint application from the Universities of Bath and Aston proposes a three-year programme of research into the potential uses of highly-nonlinear dispersion-controlled photonic crystal fibre in telecommunications, concentrating on nonlinear switching, Raman & parametric amplification and 2R (pulse shape & amplitude) regeneration. The two groups have substantial track records in complementary areas - the design 8 manufacture of highly nonlinear PCF (Bath) and the use of highly nonlinear fibres in high bit-rate telecomms systems applications (Aston).
