Summary on Grant Application Form
Accurate prediction and control of aerodynamically generated sound are of increasing importance as legislation on sound pollution is becoming more stringent and requirements for system performance and reliability are becoming more demanding. In this study, a large eddy simulation (LES) methodology and code based on the solution of the filtered unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes equations will be further developed for computational aeroacoustics (CAA). It features high-order numerical schemes for spatial discretisation and time-integration together with high-fidelity numerical boundary conditions, suitable for resolving both discrete tones and broadband noise. A hybrid method combining the high accuracy of LES in the near field and the numerical efficiency of acoustic analogies in the far field will also be developed and assessed against benchmark data. The developed methods will be used to exploit a novel concept of noise control using porous media. Preliminary experimental and computational studies have shown the effectiveness of porous media in reducing the unsteady oscillations in cavity flows. This study will investigate the mechanisms involved and quantify the noise reduction using the more accurate methods developed, which will help to design strategies for passive and active noise control. The research will be conducted in collaboration with industry and is expected to benefit a number of key industrial sectors in which the U.K. leads the world.
