|
Improving the feasibility of 3D finite element analysis is a vital issue in soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering. Currently, analysts and designers are prevented from modelling with the desired level of accuracy in 3D because of the considerable computing resources that these analyses require. This project will develop preconditioners for iterative solution methods for these problems which will make much larger analyses viable, on hardware accessible to civil engineers in industry and academia. Given the very large size of the linear systems involved, development will be based on elementby-element techniques for the formation of preconditioners and for the iterative solution stage. By analysing structure at the element level, it should be possible to solve problems related to a variety of material models for soils and to study problems with a mixture of element types and materials. Preconditioners for multi-stage analyses, as often required in geotechnics to model construction sequences as well as for non-linearity, will also be developed.
