The aims of the project are to create highly spin polarised samples of solid xenon-129, to generate hyperpolarised xenon-129 gas and to use the gas in a range of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and MRI experiments. The first part of the project will involve installing a new cryomagnetic system and designing and constructing solid xenon sample cells. NMR spin relaxation in solid xenon-129 will be studied, with particular emphasis on developing a means of reducing the xenon-129 spin lattice relaxation time using a relaxation switch in the first instance oxygen. Other relaxation switches will be investigated. The high field and low temperature available will be used to create a high equilibrium spin polarisation in the xenon-129. Removal of the relaxant will lead to long storage times for the polarised solid and subsequent warming of the solid to above 150K will enable samples of hyperpolarised gas to be prepared. We are well placed to capitalise on the benefits of the high spin polarisation in a variety of applications. A dedicated, whole-body, low -field MRI scanner is available for lung imaging with xenon-129 gas and NMR experiments in the Schools of Physics and Chemistry will exploit the environment dependent chemical shift of xenon and its high solubility in oils and other fluids.
