The thurst of the proposed research is directed the re-examination and development of new design guidelines for vision aids that use synthesised optical information, providing direct inputs to the pilot's visual perception system, hence stimulating a rapid instinctive response where appropiate.The research is motivated by the prospect of enhanced and synthetic vision being available for civil aircraft operations. the design driver for which is the amount and form of optical information. An obvious question is- how much is required to facilitate safe flight in adverse weather and degraded visibility and what kind of optical flow synthesis can help the pilot develop a reliable mental model as opposed to a dangerous illusion? In summery, the research involves a 3 stage approach; (i) identifying civil aircraft scenarios and defining test manoeuvres, (ii) conducting piloted simulations to quantify the visual scene, pilot activity and loss of situation awareness as visual information is degraded systematically from benchwork, good visual enviroments, (iii) re-construct the visual information necessary for safe flight synthetically using optical flow component, Industrial coolaboration with BAE systems will gradually apply technology and certification constraints to the research,m thus guiding the academic work to practical fruition.
