Summary on Grant Application Form
There is a need for techniques to track the cure of thermosets and to provide the basis for new process control schemes based on process models, and intelligent sensors. Ultrasound has the potential to monitor cure, detect gelation and vitrification, and possibly the molecular state of curing material. This proposal aims to develop new models of ultrasound propagation in curing thermosets which take account of microscopic inhomogeneity in the material and relate ultrasound phenomena to the kinetics of cure. This will provide the scientific basis for future shemes to model, track and control cure in an industrial context.
