Wake vortices from other aircraft can induce major disturbances for civil aircraft in the landing and take off phases of flight. This proposal covers the development of improved aerodynamic models of aircraft vortices, particularly the persistence and residue of vortices. The models developed will enable vorl models to be generated as a function of aircraft shape and configuration and take account of engine characteristics. The interaction of the aircraft with the wake vortices will be studied with high fidelity flow simulations to gain understanding and to derive low fidelity flow models for real time simulation. These models will provide the basis of real-time vortex-aircraft interaction models, which can be integrated in a simulator. Consideration will be given to techniques the compression of flow data and real-time access to flows which can incorporated in the equations of motion of a flight simulator. The project includes stud using the flight simulator facility at Cranfield University to assess the operational factors of wake vortices for a range of transport aircraft. The use of real-time simulation will also provide the basis to develop aircraft displays to provide flight crews with appropriate situation awareness in conditions of wake vortices combined with stability augmentation to reduce the effects of wake vortices.
