This proposal describes new approaches to the virtual-reality simulation of surgical operations making use of boundary element (BE) analysis to provi physically-based deformable models, along with the use of haptic (force-feedback) devices to simulate the feel of the operation. The proposed system aims to overcome a predicted shortage of initial training opportunities for surgeons, and exploits the unique ability (rarely exploited so far in the conte of surgical simulation) of boundary element analysis to provide an extremely accurate model of the physical behaviour of a solid object based only up surface data identical to that used in virtual reality models. By this means, the relative computation slowness of finite element based models and the accuracy and/or geometric limitations of simplified solid models (e.g. solid primitives) can be avoided. Simulation of cutting, and of the tough membra surrounding an object, can and will be incorporated in a BE-based simulation. This research will focus on the simulation of neurosurgical procedures, area which was specifically identified in the Call for Outline Proposals document relating to the present programme and one to which the proposed system is particularly well suited.
