SummaryDescribe the proposed research in about 200 words.A fundamental problem in the calculation of intensely swirling (subcritical) confined flows is that the entire flowfield is influenced by the downstream (i.e. outlet) boundary condition. Systematic experiments (using primarily LDA) will be carried out to quantify the influence on such flows of a range of outlet geometries. These geometries will also be designed to produce asymmetry and unsteadiness in the upstream flow. Measurements will be made of the mean flow and the turbulence structure. The research will be carried out in close association with Dr D. J. Derksen and Prof. H. van den Akker (TU Delft) who are developing LES-based CFD codes for turbulent swirling flow.
