Summary on Grant Application Form
We will apply the recently developed technique of frequency modulation from molecular motion (1) to the generation of phase-locked side-bands of femtosecond pulses. The broad spectrum of side-bands will permit the synthesis of a short train comprising a small number (~5) of high energy pulses with sub-femtosecond duration (<500 attosecond). In contrast only long trains of ~10^6 lower energy sub-femtosecond pulses have so far been generated by this technique using the modulation of nansecond pulses. Our experiments may lead to a unique source of single attosecond-pulses that would find widespread application throughout science.
