Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will asses the occurence of cavitation occuring around dental ultrasonic scaling instruments and identify those tip designes that lead to its maximum production. Cavitation will be quantified using the terephthalate indicator system. Measurements will be made for different loadings and probe designs. A unique development will be an artificial tooth/periodonta; pocket, mirroring the clincal situation and allowing assesment of cavitation in small confined spaces. The results of this work will be of immediate interest to a range of industrial manufacturers and will lead to new designs of clincal scalers, which will be of use to clinicians ( end users).
