Summary on Grant Application Form
The research involved in this proposal centres around the development of suitable technologies and tools to facilitate the capture, management and analysis of genomic data. Our particular focus is on, but is not limited to, the design of storage and analysis infrastructures for Saccharomyces cervisiae and Aspergillus fumigatus, in order to allow gene and genome level analyses and comparisons - approaches here will include the development of tools to analyse and visualise gene expression data. Another major component of the work concerns the development of computational methods to assign functional information to sequence data automatically, for example using information retrieval techniques and ontologies. This work is coupled to the development of tools for visualisation and manipulation of sequence alignments, allowing us to pinpoint characteristic family 'signatures', which we can annotate and store in a database as templates for future family diagnoses. We place particular emphasis on the functional analysis and diagnosis of medically important gene families, e.g., GPCRs, which are of major importance to the pharmaceutical industry as targets for the majority of prescription drugs. Overall, we are committed to pursuing leading-edge computer science research and to its application to the advancement of biomedical science.
