Multidimensional systems theory is a rapidly developing area with applications across physics, mathematics and engineering. We propose to carry out an intensive programme of research into a number of major open problems concerned with the decomposition and stabilization of multidimensional linear systems. To this end, we intend to invite Professor VR Sule of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India, to visit us for a period of 8 months as a full time Visiting Fellow.The decomposition of multidimensional systems is little understood, but of prime importance for the investigation of the detailed structure of systems, and for the application of various computational tests/ procedures. We intend to look at the primary decomposition and similar decompositions, and also at the extraction of subsystems having particular system-theoretic properties (such as the controllable part). This will be much related to the pole structure of the system, and therefore to stability, which is the second proposed topic of research. Current definitions of stability for nD systems are either lacking in generality or physically not well-motivated. Using physical concepts such as the energy of a system, we intend to study alternative possibilities and develop a theory of stabilization, which is entirely lacking for multidimensional systems in the general sense.
