Summary on Grant Application Form
For artificial entities to achieve true autonomy and display complex life-like behaviour they will need to exploit appropriate adaptable learning algorithms. In this sense adaptability implies flexibility guided by the environment at any given time and an open-ended ability to learn novel behaviours. This project will examine the potential of neural constructivism within an evolutionary computing-based production system architecture to realise such behaviour. Experimentation will focus on examining the approach as a means to control a mobile robot in simulation and then in a number of real environments. Increasing levels of complexity within the constructive learning will be investigated.
