Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is an adaption of the previously successful Maths on the Underground project. The adaptions are to- disseminate via buses rather than underground trains- provide supporting information via the WWW- transfer the idea to computer scienceThe aim is to identify topics core to the science that are accessible to the general public. These are presented on an advertising panel internal to a bus. Passengers characteristically have 15-30 uninterrupted minutes to digest such material; the Maths on the Underground experience proves that the layperson finds such an approach digestible and interesting.Properly designed, such panels educate very successfully, and teach the reader that there is more to the science than (for example) word processors. Thus, we would succeed in communicating some of what universities do . This is intrinsically useful in adjusting public attitudes to research and HE, but might also influence opinions connected with applications to study. It is not anticipated that the material would be peculiar to the University of Leeds, and so would be usable anywhere and support such publicity on behalf of the entire sector.
