Summary on Grant Application Form
This high profile project will use the product range of a supermarket to demonstrate some of the areas where science and technology shape the way we live. We will work with Sainsbury's supermarket group to present 'Science on the Shelves' content aimed at inspiring public interest in science, particularly amongst the young. This includes using packaging materials for a range of own-label products (principally breakfast cereal packets), placing articles in the Sainsbury's magazine and on their web site. For example, Sainsbury's have said that they would like a series of five science instalments for cereal packets aimed at children, each feature having a run of about five million. There is the possibility of a second run of five instalments during the course of this project. We will also deliver supporting and linking material: at least one article in the Sainsbury's magazine, and a Science on the Shelves' area of the web site with content aimed at children, adults, and teachers. A steering group will contribute the expertise necessary for creating the maximum impact, engaging with the public through competitions and promotions.
