A detailed study is proposed aimed at demonstrating the potential use of pulsed plasma polymerization for the functionalization of solid substrates with polymerization initiators. This will entail depositing peroxide and silyl triflate groups onto solid surfaces for application as templates for free radical and ionic polymerization respectively. The project will also investigate the covalent attachment of free radical azo initiators onto plasma functionalised surfaces. The final stage will address the fabrication of three-dimensional polymer structures using the outlined surface initiated polymerization techniques with microlateral resolution and nanometer vertical resolution. It is envisaged that the proposed methodologies would be adaptable to a whole variety of substrate materials. Thereby offering a significant advantage compared to existing methods for surface initiated polymerization (which typically tend to be substrate-specific, e.g. self-assembled-monolayers (SAMs) on gold or silicon surfaces).
