This is the contribution to the DAPPLE consortium project from the University of Surrey. DAPPLE relates to the EPSRC Infrastructure & Environment Programme for sustainable urban environments. It aims to quantify determinants of human exposure to air pollution from outdoor sources in urban environment s and to use the basic understanding gained in the evaluation and development of appropriate decision support tools and risk assessment methodologies, and best practice guidelines for their application, and in assessing the inherent uncertainty in their use.Experiments will be undertaken in the EnFlo wind tunnel to study in detail the flow and dispersion characteristics at street intersections in urban areas using a range of models, including detailed and simplified models of the DAPPLE field site and generic intersection models. Measurements will include the mean and Fluctuating velocity, concentration and mass flux fields for a range of neutral and stable boundary layer conditions with point and line continuous and short duration sources. The results will be used in the design of the field experiments and in interpretation of the resulting data, in developing understandi ring of pollutant transport and dilution processes at street intersections, as a basis for testing the performance of compuational procedures for flow and dispersiojn predicitonand in proposing and for testing improvemennts to those procedures.
