Summary on Grant Application Form
Interest in gas or liquid assisted injection moulding has been renewed with the recent development of 1) direct gas mixing in the polymer melt 2) water injection 3) cryogenically cooled gas injection. These three different but related techniques provide many benefits in the injection process and demand is growing for their application. However, scientific underpinning of the technologies lags behind, and will constrain the uptake and further development of novel processes. We propose a 2 year programme, integrated between the Bradford and Warwick sites, to study a range of gas or liquid - assisted injection moulding processing operations, with a view to optimising set up of the process, enhanced control of the accuracy and repeatability of the process, and exploration of fluidassisted injection processing for a range of amorphous and semi-crystalline polymers.
