Summary on Grant Application Form
The rapidly growing area of brain imaging is generating a significant need for both generic and application-specific analysis tools. Clinical and non-clinical imaging-based research into brain function, structure and pathologies requires advanced analysis methods in order to take imaging data and produce useful, reliable, quantitative information. Whilst there has recently been an explosion in imaging modalities and in the applications of brain imaging, there remains a large amount of research to be carried out developing analysis methods, development of which has tended to lag behind hardware technology and end-applications.This proposal covers two levels in the area of brain image analysis. The first is the development of generic analysis methods - in particular, relating to the detailed and flexible alignment of one brain image with another. Whilst there has. been much effort to date put into this nonlinear registration , there are still many unsolved or non-optimally solved aspects.The second level is applications of nonlinear registration to problems such as: Analysis of shape change (e.g. regional brain volume loss) Statistical analysis of single-time-point structural images (e.g. differences between schizophrenics and controls) Analysis of multiparametric images (e.g. using MTR to detect pathology) Nonlinear correction of head motion for FMRI data
