Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this research is to further knowledge in the relatively new subject of uncertainty, in particular in the field of structural dynamics. All measurements, no matter what the field, are subject to uncertainty. The effect of this uncertainty may be relatively unimportant in many cases, however, in certain structures or systems, where safety is a critical issue, failure to build in the concept of uncertainty may have expensive repercussions. For example, an aircraft incorporating a health monitoring system which does not allow for the admittance of ignorance concerning environmental variations may falsely signal damage within the aircraft structure, resulting in costly, unnecessary inspections. Potentially more dangerous is the case where true damage goes unnoticed for the same reasons. By considering various types of uncertainty models, investigating how the information from these models may be combined and investigating how uncertainty can propagate through a system will result in more reliable health monitoring systems and hence increased safety. Although the field is in its infancy and little progress has been made, the potential benefit to a wide range of industries is huge and this research, if successful, will contribute significantly to its usefulness.
