Summary on Grant Application Form
The Reseach would concern the following: M-theory ; its low energy effective action (eleven dimensional supergravity) ; the objects in M-theory i.e the membrane and the five brane. The primary area of reseach would be couplings between both the objects themselves such as the membrane five brane interaction and the couplings be tween the objects and the ambient supergravity such as coupling of the five menbrane to supergravity. The techniques used in the investigation would be the following: the identifacation of appropriate scaling limits to study the different properties: linearization of the non linear theories about non trivial backgrounds and the studying of the subsequent linearized theory: the analysis of soliton solutions and their descriptions of their moduli space; the identification of appropriate topological observables and data-this related in particular to the chem -simons type couplings and the use general quantum field theory techniques to examine the quantum aspects of the interactions. An emphasis would also be placed on understanding the role and construction of dualities.
