This proposal will develop signal-processing methods that can jointly mitigate crosstalk and impulsive noise using Multiuser detection (MUD) based transceivers. Crosstalk and impulse noise are the two principal sources of degradation in xDSL transmission systems. The traditional single-user data detector (SUD) for such systems merges crosstalk into the background noise, which is assumed to be white and Gaussian. Crosstalk is the result of the sum of several filtered discrete data signals. Its distribution deviates from Gaussian, and its power spectral density (PSD) is also significantly greater than that of background AWGN. In xDSL transmission impulse noise is overcome with interleaved Forward Error Correction (FEC).
