The degree of emission polarization is an indicator of surface type and this project seeks ways of exploiting this fact to characterise surface morphology and for designing surfaces to have specific desired properties. This will be achieved through the development of Monte-Carlo code that models the emission and reflection properties of rough surfaces with specified height and slope distributions and spatial correlation properties. The potential for incorporation of finescale roughness features will be assessed by refining effective medium theories for optical parameters using inhomogeneous profiles and stochastic modelling. Diffraction effects will be incorporated within the spirit of the geometrical optics approximation by using randomly distributed point scatterers on the facets with specified polarization sensitive phase functions. The models will be used to predict the polarization properties of known surface types and to fashion surfaces to have a desired polarization signature. The results will be validated throughout with data obtained by the industrial collaborator from their experimental programme.
