Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the proposed research is the development of effective techniques to interact with web search engines. This specific proposal is based on the use of automatic query-baised summarisation techniques for web documents. We have demonstrated that summaries are a popular and effective means of assessing documents, that our approach to summarisation is more useful than the existing descriptions given by web search engines, and that summarisation techniques can lead to more efficient searching by a user. The presence of document summaries can also lead to more interaction with the user. This increased interaction can be used to implicitly gather information that can improve a user's search, e.g. by suggesting new query terms, recommending new web pages from the list of unseen documents or personalisation of summaries. To fully realise this benefit it is necessary to develop more sophisticated methods of creating summaries, in particular summaries that are tailored to the user's query, and to develop methods for extracting information from the user's interaction with the summaries. These developments are the main focus of this proposal.
