I will use the recently-developed theory of quantum retrodiction to analyse quantum information systems. The emphasis will initially be on the individual components of a quantum information processor, such as cloners and gates, leading to the consideration of full algorithms from the point of measurement back to the possible inputs to the device.Information processors will also require repeated or partial measurements. It is likely that these systems will be most simply treated using a partially predictive and partially retrodictive approach. i will test this hypothesis by initially using Bayesian inference from the predictive and retrodictive points of view.I will design optical circuits which illustrate retrodictive principles in quantum information systems. Some of these, such as the quantum scissors device, have already been proposed.
