In magnetic recording the possibility of achieving significant increase of density in longitudinal media is becoming problematic as the grain size approaches the superparamgnetic limit, where thermal effects reduce the stability of magnetic states. In order to satisfy the demand for the storage of rapidly growing volumes of information a new approach to magnetic media has to be developed. In this proposal I plan to explore one possible candidate for high density magnetic recording, known as patterned media. Due to the low dimensions and high aspect ratio of the elements the overall density of recorded information can be up to 1 Tbit per square inch. The aim of the proposal is the fabrication and detailed characterisation of patterned arrays of magnetic elements. The fabrication will be performed using electron-beam lithography and electrodeposition to ensure high resolution of the magnetic elements. The project will pay particular attention to the magnetic characterisation of patterns. By combining a variety of both macroscopic and microscopic techniques I intend to perform a detailed investigation of the properties of patterned media in relation to physical parameters. The investigation will primarily involve measurements using high-field micro-cantilever magnetometry. Other techniques, including high-field FMR and SQUID, SEM, MFM, NMR, AGM, MOKE will also be used. In order to analyse the results mean-field and micromagnetic modeling will be used to simulate the experimental results.
