Summary on Grant Application Form
The production of materials with novel structures from doubly metastable liquids has not previously been considered. This will b explored by studying ice formed in doubly metastable (simultaneously superheated and supercooled) water. High-Speed Microphotography and NMR Spectroscopy will be used to assess whether the ice possesses novel structure(s) as a consequence formation within the doubly metastable region. It is also planned to study whether the icosahedral clustering concentration of water be reduced by tension-induced superheat, rather than thermally. If so, the consequences will be explored, in terms of the energy c and speed of production of partially-frozen systems.
