Summary on Grant Application Form
A holistic approach for the design, upgrading and / or expansion of pipe networks is proposed. The aim of the project is to develop a technique that will produce reliable, robust yet flexible designs that meet the needs of engineers in the context of design, upgrading and expansion of water systems and pipe networks. The proposed technique involves further research and development and novel applications of optimisation procedures for water industry applications based on a hybrid of population-based techniques (such as genetic algorithms, shuffled complex evolution, differential evolution etc), response surface methods and artificial neural networks. The inverse mapping capability of artificial neural networks will be ul6lizeol to estimate the optimal variable values based on the near optimal solutions. The proposed method will be compared with other well-established techniques in terms of performance, suitability and flexibility in usage. The results will be disseminated to the water industry via conferences, publications in journals, and direct liaison with interested parties. It is envisaged that the successful implementation of this project would benefit users of pipe network models, water companies and consumers.
