The proposed research addresses an ongoing need to focus on sustainable development. It aims to elicit professional preferences for multi-glazed windows in new and retrofit building projects, and to provide valuable building user feedback to the construction process. The research aims firstly to establish the relative importance to professionals and designers of: capital, running and life cycle costs in the selection of multi-glazed windows; price in relation to sustainability criteria; and various factors which determine sustainability, including longevity, maintainability, durability, energy consumption, raw material use, and thermal, visual and aural performance. Secondly the research aims to provide valuable feedback from building occupants in relation to comfort and productivity of the working environment. The proposed research will have two distinct phases. The first phase concerns the attitudes, perceptions and choices of designers and specifiers with regard to multi-glazed windows using Focus Groups and Semi-Structured Interview techniques. The second phase focuses on the preferences and satisfaction of building users with the indoor environment via Post Occupancy Evaluation techniques. The combination of results from these two perspectives will provide valuable information to designers, specifiers and policymakers in the selection of sustainable options for multi-glazed windows in buildings. It will help to identify any areas where there is a shortfall in consideration of sustainability criteria.
