The proposal is for part funding for a Visiting Fellowship to enable Professor Dani Mandler to spend one year in the research group of Professor Pat Unwin, at the University of Warwick, as a Visiting Fellow in order to develop several novel ideas. The aim is to explore whether microfabrication processes, e.g. metal ion binding, metal deposition and polymerisation can be carried out locally in 2-D monolayer systems at the water/gas interface. The proposed studies, utilising a novel apparatus at Warwick, which combines scanning electrochemical microscopy with a Langmuir trough, draw on the complementary expertise of the applicant and Visiting Fellow. The proposed Visiting Fellow is an expert in the use of SECM for micropatterning the solid-liquid interface and in the application of self-assembled monolayers for the formation of 2-D conducting polymers. By working together, the applicant and Visiting Fellow expect to identify new systems and methods for microfabrication, which will be the focus for subsequent development and application. While in the UK, the Visiting Fellow would also make visits to other Departments and research groups to disseminate the results of his recent work on self-assembled systems and SECM. Both of these topics are of considerable interest in the UK, and Professor Mandler has a high international profile for his research in these areas.
