Summary on Grant Application Form
This application for a Materials Programme Platform Grant is submitted by the Device Materials Group (DMG) at the Department of Materials Science, University of Cambridge. Over twenty-five years the group has gained a world-class reputation across a wide spectrum of functional materials research including magnetic, superconducting and ferroelectric materials; metals, oxides, nitrides and carbides. Many projects are collaborative, involving close interaction with industry, institutions and universities around the world. The continued success of the group depends on maintaining and developing expertise and infrastructure in two core research areas: the precision deposition of thin films, including epitaxial oxide materials; and the processing and characterisation of a wide range of heterostructure devices. Currently these activities are supported by two key Post-Doctoral workers, Dr. V.N. Tsaneva and Dr. G. Burnell. The aim of this proposal for a Materials Programme Platform Grant is to provide underpinning support and continuity for these key research staff whose expertise extends beyond particular project areas and who can provide flexibility in assisting the development of new research activities. This will not only ensure the continued development of the research portfolio, but offer opportunities for both long-term and short-term research which are difficult to support within the current funding arrangements.
