Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project is to develop novel numerical models that describe the behaviour of laminar and turbulent fluid/particle flows. Two-phase flows involving water and suspended particles arise in a wide range of Civil and Environmental applications, including bed fluidisation and scour, rapid gravity filtration and release of particles from marine outfalls. In this class of problems particle-interaction and disparage of time and spatial scales presents a particular problem in quantitative predictions of the flows. The focus of this work will be to develop an efficient LBWLGM model incorporating subgrid turbulence models and moving boundaries and to conduct numerical simulations and detail comparison with experimental data to assess the accuracy and versatility of the LBM and LGM in reproducing bulk properties of the flow such as suspended particle distribution and bed porosity and engineering design parameters including head losses and equilibrium scour profile. Furthermore stochastic tracking techniques for fictitious particles will be used to provide statistical measures of particle concentration and settlement. These-supplemented by measurements, will provide a means to evaluate the existing empirical formulae in order to achieve better understanding of these formulae and better description of the parameters involved.
