Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this research is to develop numerical techniques for the simulation of 3-dimensional post-failure analysis of landslides and debris flows on complex terrains. The ability to effectively predict the paths of debris flows subsequent to failure of natural slopes would be of great assistance in the strategies of risk assessment and hazard mitigation, which could range from better-informed planning decisions to the design and placement of protective structures. The numerical method proposed is one of a family of new techniques, known collectively as meshless methods, which show great potential for the simulation of a range of complex engineering problems that conventional computational techniques such as the finite element method are unable to deal with effectively.
