Describe the proposed research in about 200 words.A primary goal of this proposed project is to construct an apparatus for measuring the magnetic penetration depth of superconductors with high precision at very low temperature (less than 100 milli-Kelvin). This will give us a very powerful new tool to study fundamental aspects of superconductivity both in the cuprates and other strongly correlated electron superconductors. Complementary work at higher temperature (above 1 Kelvin) will be continued using existing equipment. Several materials have been identified for study. These include: high Tc cuprate superconductors, organic superconductors, heavy fermion superconductors, strontium ruthenate and magnesium diboride (and related materials). The proposed research aims to answer several topical questions regarding the pairing interaction and the nature of the low energy excitations in these materials. This will increase our understanding of the basic physics of these compounds which will eventually help in developing new materials and applications.
