Skirted and piled rafts both transmit foundation loads to stronger soil beneath the surface as they both consist of a surface raft together with foundation components that penetrate the soil beneath. Their effectiveness depends on complex soil-structure interaction effects which make simple design rules difficult to formulate. In this project, they will be studied together as their experimental and numercial modelling is quite similar and there are similarities in their behaviour. Of particular interest will be how the capacity of these systems under horizontal loads vary with the number of piles or skirts.Horizontally loaded, composite foundations will be investigated using centrifuge model testing, numerical analysis and analytical modelling. Reduced scale model tests will be conducted using centrifuge modelling. Existing finite element tools will be extended to understand how the foundation systems behave, in particular by comparing calculated soil movements with those measured in the centrifuge. Analysis will synthesize knowledge gained utilising the different research tools to understand the soil-foundation systems and to modify design recommendations.Findings from the project will benefit engineers using skirted foundations. In addition, engineers will be able to choose appropriate number of piles for piled raft systems based on new design recommendations.
