Summary on Grant Application Form
Ne will develop a high power, all-optical pulsed source of coherent THz radiation. Such sources are potentially of considerable importance for coherent imagii eg in the dental, medical and electronics industries) and spectroscopy (eg for environmental monitoring). The ultimate goal is routine generation of coherent T -adiation approaching mW power levels using novel semiconductor structures.Dur unique MBE facility provides us with distinct opportunities to tailor the electronic band structure in a range of semiconductor heterostructures. We will )ptimise the electric field profile and material characteristics responsible for the surface emission generation of THz pulses using excitation with sub-100fs wlses of visible light. Our principal aim will be to investigate and exploit the dramatic surface emission enhancement in a magnetic field, which we have recei dentified.the high power sources obtained will form the foundation for a coherent imaging and spectroscopy system. Pixel-by-pixel time and frequency dependent spec will be obtained, allowing the construction of compositional images. We will specifically investigate the contrast mechanisms obtained in two demonstrator nedical projects.
