Summary on Grant Application Form
The coating of a layer of fluid onto a moving substrate is both an important industrial process and a rich area of study from an academic viewpoint. This proposal is for a fundamental investigation into direct gravure coating, a commonly used but poorly understood process. A wide ranging experimental investigation will map out the operability of the process in terms of the resulting film thickness and the stability of the coated film since these are of importance to end-users. In addition a fundamental study using novel experimental methods will be made of the fluid dynamics of the process, this will reveal the underlying mechanisms that control it. Ultimately this will remove the black art from the process and allow gravure coating to be understood from a scientific view point. The detailed knowledge of the flow field will be also be used
