Liquid transfer from engraved cavities to substrates in order to create pattern is the essential feature in a range of printing processes (grate pad, screen, anilox). Apart from the pioneering research into themicro-scale fluid dynamics of gravure printing currently being funded on grant [C-R/N89249] there has been no serii attempt to theoretically model and/or simulate irk transfer in engraved cavity-based printing processes. The proposed research seeks to address this serious shortcoming by extending and modifying the finite element software developed on the currert grant to explore pad and screen printing, and to analyse the effects of imperfect cell filling and shear-thinning rheolgy In particular the fraction of liquid transferred from a given cavity will be calculated, and the effects of varying the geometry and fluid properties will be explored.Furthermore, it is intended to add another canputational weapon to our arsenal (one that will enable effective simulation of liquid rupture) by developing a volume of fluid (vof) code.
