This project will apply a minimum cross-entropy (MCE) approach to the problem of despeckling images from coherent systems. We aim to demonstrate the procedure on the particular problem of radar cross-section reconstruction from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. SAR is an important instrument in Earth Observation and remote sensing for mapping and environmental monitoring but its application can be limited by the noise-like speckle that is inherent in the imagery.MCE methods have been applied in a wide range of image reconstruction problems, but have been noticeably underused for SAR imagery. This project will apply both traditional MCE methods as well as a new approach based on previous work by the PI. Fully iterative methods as well as filter-based methods will be implemented.Additionally we aim to explore the potential for MCE methods on multi-channel SAR data, particularly fully polarimetric imagery.
