Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal if for an experimental feasibility study of a device for measuring the Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio of a surface layer. The concept is to record reflection of longitudinal and shear ultrasound from a coated/modified surface when pressed against a body of known material and surface roughness. The reflection measurements are then related to the normal and shear stiffness of the interface fromwhich the elastic properties of the layer are deduced. Knowledge of layer properties will benefit manufacturers and users of all forms of coated or surface modified components. This work seeks to develop a robust technique with a view to developing an industrial device.
