At this time, there is no electrochemical sensor yet available to measure both the anaesthetic agents and 02 at the common gas outlet of an anaesthetic machine, let alone at the patient's airway. Present day clinical gas analysers are expensive in the developed world, and prohibitively expensive in under-developed countries. The development of a simple, inexpensive, electrochemical sensor, with an operating life of 12-24 months, would be a major advance on current clinical infrared vapour/ gas analysis techniques. The proposed project involves a collaboration between a hospital-based Anaesthetics research department that has the academic clinical environment within which the proposed sensor can both be developed and tested, and a Chemistry group with wide-ranging experience of modern electroanalytical techniques. This partnership is already working successfully on another project area and, because of this, we are confident that the proposed project work will be completed successfully within the 42 month period.(We propose that the student starts his/her DPhil project six months after the post-doctoral assistant commences work, and will thus finish six months later - hence the 42 month duration).
